Abstract

A phytoplanktonic survey along with water quality of Saank, Asaun,  Kuari and Chambal rivers in Morena district (M.P.) has been reported for the first time.  All the rivers under study seem to be polluted.  The degree of pollution on determined by calculating water quality indices follow the order Saank with WQI 209.36 > Chambal with  WQI 186.15 >  Asaun with WQI 169.84 >  Kuari with WQI 148.72.  In all sixty six planktonic algae were identified. Out of which thirty eight species belong to Cholrophyceae, twelve species to Bacillariophyceae,  nine species to  Cyanophyceae and seven species to Euglenophyceae.  The presence of Pediastrum tetras,  Genicularia sp.,  Xanthidium sp., Glaucocystis nostochinearum,  Crusigenia tetrapedia,  Oscillatoria curviceps,  O. tenvis,Trachelomonas hispida and Melosira variance in these riversis indicative of waters polluted due to rich organic Matter.
